Identify all the manufacturing areas/equipment and their respective processes.

Be sure to identify all different types of processes such as operations, maintenance, cleaning, safety and changeovers.

Assign codes to each process so it’s easier to reference.

Identify high level steps for each discrete process so that the videographer and subject matter expert are aligned with what is demonstrated and recorded.

The quality of the video and narration is key to the success of the guide output. Adequately preparing for the video and aligning everyone on the above information ensures both the quality of the final output, and that you can get to it efficiently.

Ensure the videographer and the subject matter expert both have lapel mics affixed onto their shirt collar, so audio from both individuals can be captured in the video.

Double-check that the video recording app on the mobile device is configured to use the external lapel microphones and not the device’s built-in microphone.

To block out external noise and monitor audio input, we recommend that the videographer use Noise Cancelling Headphones, plugged into the receiver's headphone jack.

Start the recording with a narration of the process name that’s being recorded.

e.g. “Today we’re going to perform a changeover procedure changing the filter out of the displacement pump on Line 3.”

If you are taking numerous videos, it helps with organization to label the videos with the process code or the name of the machine and process.

As the subject matter expert is demonstrating each step of the process, ensure to verbalize and provide additional detail and context to the process being performed.

e.g. “I’m installing the funnels on top of the tubes” should have the added context of “I’m installing the funnels on top of the tubes, when I’m putting it on I’m feeling for a flat part on the back and a little hole in the front of the funnel so it’s aligned properly.”

While narrating a step of a process, direct the camera at the area being described and hold it steady.

If a step of a process has a lot of detail or you want to be specific of a particular image, take a photo of that part of the process during recording.

This leads to a stronger correlation between the guide images and work instructions.

While demonstrating before/after processes, record what happens before and after the action is performed.

e.g. “Before resetting the alarm on the machine there is a blinking red Andon light. I’m going to reset the alarm on the machine by pressing the acknowledge button and now the red Andon light should turn off.”

To provide additional context about a particular step or complex process, a dialogue can be had between the subject matter expert and videographer.

For subject matter experts where English is not their first language, they can also use their native language to provide a more accurate and comprehensive description of the process.

If the audio quality or narration is not intelligible and you do not want to rerecord the video, you can utilize a post-process video editing application to add a narrated voice over to improve the quality of the video.

Download the videos from your mobile device onto a computer and rename/reorganize the files accordingly.

Review the video to ensure audio and image clarity.
